Fall leaf collection typically begins in late October and continues through the remainder of the calendar year. Town crews make at least three passes through Town during the leaf collection period. A map showing leaf collection progression can be viewed from October through the end of the year and a list of streets showing leaf collection progress can be found here. The Town also posts “Leaf Collection Coming Soon” signs in neighborhoods in advance of collection.

Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb for collection any time between Mid-October and December 31. Leaf piles should be free of limbs, sticks, acorns, and other debris that may clog the vacuum hose.

Alternatively, Town residents may bag leaves for pick up on regular weekly trash collection days. Please place leaves in paper yard waste bags available at garden and home supply stores or loose in a can. In accordance with anti-pollution laws, burning leaves is prohibited. Rake leaves just to the curb. Raking leaves into the street is dangerous because:

• Cars parked on leaf piles may catch fire.
• Children playing in the leaves may be struck by a passing vehicle.
• Leaves may prevent rainwater from reaching storm drain inlets.

The Town of Vienna is responsible for clearing snow and ice from all public streets. The Town’s fleet of plows and spreaders are on duty 24 hours a day during and following snowfall events - until all streets are clear and safe.

Snow removal priority

Pre-treatment of roads begins when winter weather is anticipated. Plowing begins when the snow reaches a depth of approximately two inches.

Primary streets are cleared first, followed by secondary, and then neighborhood streets. In the event of an ongoing storm, plows may have to return to primary routes to remove additional accumulation, but crews will return to clearing secondary and neighborhood streets as soon as possible.

Residents can assist in efficient snow removal by:

• not traveling during snow and ice storms unless absolutely necessary
• avoiding parking on the street during plowing (parking in a driveway reduces the chances of having to shovel a vehicle out of a snow drift)
• not shoveling snow from sidewalks and driveways into the roadway
• clearing snow from hydrants so firefighters can respond more quickly in an emergency
• keeping water meter enclosures clear of snow and ice during winter weather (if the meter cannot be read due to obstruction from snow or ice, an estimated water bill will be rendered)
• shoveling sidewalks as soon as possible after the storm has ended - and even helping out a neighbor who may be unable, for health or other reasons, to shovel.

The public works department's spring street sweeping program typically begins in March. For street-sweeping purposes, the Town has been divided into eight service sections, which are swept in order from section one to section eight.

For the first pass in the spring only, the Town requests that residents not park on streets in the section being swept to allow the sweepers to do a thorough job. “Coming soon” signs are placed on streets as a reminder.

Once the first pass is completed, the sweeper will return to the first section and start over, possibly covering the Town several times over the course of warmer months. Streets also are swept after special events, such as ViVa Vienna and Oktoberfest.
